Welcome to Utah's Iconic Wild West

Providing year-round ethically based & environmentally friendly wild horse photography tours

The Onaqui Wild Horse HMA (herd management area) is located in the West Desert and encompasses 321 square miles just a short drive southwest from Salt Lake City, Utah.  The picturesque valley extends from Johnson's Pass to Lookout Pass and offers background views of the Cedar Mountains, Stansbury Mountains and Simpson Mountains.

Ecologically conscious private tours are provided year-round, weather permitting, to provide professional photographers, explorers and horse lovers alike a unique opportunity to observe, learn about and capture images of these iconic wild horses.

My tours are tailored to accommodate any photography skill level and a spacious 4x4 vehicle is used to follow marked dirt roads leading to remote mountain and/or desert areas.  (Driving off pre-established dirt roads is not permitted as it is very damaging to our fragile desert ecosystem and a fire hazard)

My guests will be provided with comprehensive information about the Onaqui herds, band structure and individual horses.  You'll learn their names, stories and what challenges they have had and may still face both on and off the range.  You'll also learn in real time about wild horse behavior and how to read their body language, mannerisms and interactions.  More specific range information can be found here.

Why book local?

By choosing to accompany me on range you are getting the advantage of a unique and customizable experience from someone whose life is entrenched the wild horses on a daily basis.  I've spent over 3,000 hours documenting the herd, the individual family members, their locations, patterns, hide outs and likes and dislikes.  This enables me to help you to have the best experience possible during your tour.  It also helps you to feel confident that our time spent with the wild horses is done in a way which is most at harmony with their comfort level and with the intention of preserving their natural behaviors and surrounding ecological resources for years to come.

I offer private tours for 1 to 4 guests which vary from 4 hours to all day and I also offer 4 different workshop opportunities for small groups of 4-5 photographers throughout the year.  Limiting the number of guests for each safari or workshop is critically important to me to 1) help ensure our activities don't disturb the herds and 2) to be able to offer each guest a unique, informative and personalized experience where you can learn more about the horses themselves and for more advanced photographers it gives an opportunity to practice technique and artistic variations when composing and framing an image in the field.
